Bertha W. Manning departed this life Friday, November 5, 1999.

Bertha, a Portsmouth native, was born April 7, 1912, to the late Frank W. Walker Sr. and Ella Dunham Walker. She attended Portsmouth public schools and graduated from I.C. Norcom High School.

She met and married William E. Manning in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she lived for 46 years. She worked for several financial services firms on Wall Street. Upon retirement, she relocated to Portsmouth. A resident of the Brighton section of Portsmouth, she was a member of Providence Methodist AME Church, the Rev. Alphonso Griffin, pastor.

Left to cherish Bertha's memory are her family and friends: her sister, Christine V. Pruden; two nieces, Velma Felton and Clarice Shamblee; two nephews, Walter C. Pruden and Rudolph B. Pruden; three great-nephews and two great-nieces, Nathaniel and Natalie Boyd, Tremaine Shamblee, and Christine and Vincent Pruden; and her friends, Aldora Davis, Rudy Davis and James Ward.

Her family and friends will forever hold in their hearts many loving moments shared.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Lincoln Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family will assemble at Fisher Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Monday. Viewing will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
