FRED MANVILLE TAYLOR was born July 11, 
1855. at Northville, Michigan. He received his 
Bachelor's degree at Northwestern University in
 1876 and a Master's degree from the same institution 
in 1879. His graduate study included work at Johns 
Hopkins, and in 1888 he received the degree of Doctor 
of Philosophy from the University of Michigan. In
 1926 his alma mater, Northwestern, conferred upon
 him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. 

For thirteen years (1879-1892) he occupied the chair
 of history at Albion College, and for thirty-seven years 
(1892-1929) he was an active member of the economic 
faculty of the University of Michigan—completing 
half a century of continuous teaching service. Coming 
to Michigan as Assistant Professor of Political Econ
omy and Finance he was advanced to a junior professorship in 1894 and to a professorship in 1904. 
Upon retirement in the spring of 1929 he was made
 Professor Emeritus of Economics. He died at South
 Pasadena, California, on August 7, 1932, in his sev
enty-eighth year.
