Mr. Terry Dean Nelson, BT(C) retired United States Navy, of Graham, Alabama died Friday, January 10, 2014. He was 79.

Mr. Nelson was born in Hayesville, North Carolina on March 20, 1934, the son of the late Dent K. Nelson and Roxie Carlton Nelson.

He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 until 1970. Throughout his military career he served upon the USS Pittsburgh (CA72), USS O'Brien (DD725), USS Denis J. Buckley (DDR889), USS Rowan (DD782), USS Steinaker (DD863) and at several U.S. Navy Recruiting Stations. Mr. Nelson received the following medals for his service, Good Conduct Medal 5th award, National Defense Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with "Europe" Clasp and China Service Medal. After he retired from the U.S. Navy, he worked for Georgia Power retiring after 20 years.

Mr. Nelson was a member of the Holmesville Masonic Lodge 195 F&AM in Baxley, Georgia, Al Sihah Shrine International, Macon, Georgia and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Hayesville, North Carolina.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Gosdin Nelson; children and their spouses, Elesa Varnadore of Baxley, Georgia, Terri and Adrian Stubbs of Carrollton, Dedra and Fulvio Cenciarelli of Suwanee, Georgia, Lee and Jennifer McKenzie of Bowdon; grandchildren, Christy (Luke) Schuster of Douglasville, Mary (Jason) Raburn of Carrollton, Melissa (Chip) Sullivan of Villa Rica, Caleb Varnadore of Baxley, Georgia, Seth Stubbs of Carrollton, Anna Cenciarelli of Suwanee, Sofia Cenciarelli of Suwanee, Aleah McKenzie of Bowdon, Jackson McKenzie of Bowdon; great grandson, Kade Raburn of Carrollton; sisters, Thelma Dean of Carrollton, Carol (Billy) Shadrix of Carrollton, Jane Cheek of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alews and Catherine Gosdin; two infant brothers, David and Lloyd; brother, Denny Nelson; son, Dent Nelson; sister-in-law, Barbara Wiggins; brother-in-law, Irving Dean and grandson, Joshua Varnadore.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 14 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Rev. Neil Awbrey officiating.

Pallbearers will be Steven Shadrix, Rod Shadrix, Nelson Dean, Steven Nelson, Matthew Jiles and Taylor Shadrix. Honorary pallbearers will be Talon Cooley, L. C. Sailors and Sammy Joe Cooley.

Interment will be in Carroll Memory Gardens with Masonic rites and full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
