Daughter of Commodore Ernest Lee Jahncke, Sr., New Orleans shipbuilder and Ass't Secretary of the Navy during Herbert Hoover administration. She was the great-granddaughter of Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War in Abraham Lincoln's cabinet. On April 12, 1933, she was the sponsor of the heavy cruiser USS New Orleans (CA-32) when it was launched at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
