Dr. Rockwell D. Hunt, was named "Mr. California" in 1954 by Gov. Goodwin Knight in recognition of his lifetime of teaching and writing California history.

Dr. Hunt, the dean of California historians, authored 16 books and numerous articles dealing with the state's history. Two notable were "Boyhood Days of Mr. California" and his autobiography, "Mr California."
