P.V.(Philips Vance) Howard, 89, of Henrietta, Texas passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014.
Funeral services will be at 2:00PM, Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Henrietta, Texas with Rev. Howard Walker, pastor of the First Christian Church in Henrietta, Texas officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Henrietta, under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.
P.V. (Philips Vance) Howard was born on February 26, 1924 at the home place in Spanish Fort, in Montague County, Texas. P.V. was born to W.I. and Vera Inez (Gist) Howard. In 1929 the ranch in the Bluegrove area was purchased additionally, a home in Henrietta was obtained, so as to be located between the two ranches. A lifetime rancher/cattleman, he owned cattle from a very young age. He ranched into his mid 80's. In 2008 P.V. and Juanell moved back from south Texas to Henrietta to be closer to family and friends.
P.V. graduated from Henrietta High School in 1942. After high school he attended Texas A&M University for a semester and a half before enlisting in the US Marine Corps in 1943. His tour of duty was in the Pacific arena and included Iwo Jima and the early occupation of Japan.
Upon returning to the United States he resumed ranching. On April 24, 1947, P.V. married Mary Elizabeth Slagle. They had two children, Phyllis Elizabeth, who passed away at birth, and Robert Scott (Bob). Mary Elizabeth died in October of 1979 after 32 years of marriage.
P.V. married Florence Juanell Baird Martin (Nell) on January 31, 1981. Upon their marriage, he welcomed her children Terry and Laneise and their family, and Nell accepted Bob and his family. P.V. was the oldest Nine-Man-Board member and a lifetime member of the VFW.
P.V. was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, daughter Phyllis, brother-in-law Bill Dugger, sister Nannie Catherine Dugger and son-in-law Tim McClure.
P.V. is survived by his wife Juanell (Nell) Howard; children, Robert (Bob) Howard and wife Cathy, Terry and Lamona Martin and Laniece McClure; grandchildren Natalie and Nick Eubanks, Lance Jessica Howard, Terry N. McClure, Joe and Brandi McClure, Rachael and Allen Woods, Jonathon Martin, Stephanie and Greg Snyder, Amanda Johnson and Adam Darling; 12 great-grandchildren, Dakota, Cody, Sierra, Aidan, Rylen, Ryleigh, Nathan, Rayna, Savannah, Addison, Benjamin and Lilly.
We were blessed to have excellent care from Dianna, Rene, Lisa, Mary, Josie and Katie, as well as a number of others as his condition declined. Hospice of Wichita Falls joined the care team in the last week of his life. All involved were greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls at PO Box 4804, Wichita Falls, Texas 76308 or the Sherrie Baird Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Deaf at Southwest Colligate School for the Deaf at 101 Birdwell Lane, Big Springs, Texas 79720.
The family will be at Davis Funeral Home Monday evening from 6:00PM-7:00PM.
