Mary lived out her retirement years in a high-rise apartment building for senior citizens in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, United States of America. Her pastimes included hand-knitting colorful yarn into afghans which could be used as blankets, throws, wraps, and shawls, or to decorate the backs of chairs or as wall hangings. She also enjoyed calls and letters from her daughter and sending birthday cards to her grandchildren.

Mary was 95 years, 2 months, and 30 days of age on Friday 21 February 2003 and in Akron, Summit County, Ohio when she died. She lived 34,791 days.

Mary is buried in the Friends Cemetery in Quaker City, Guernsey County, Ohio. The gravesite marker is etched with a decorative scroll at the top of which is a cross and ivy leaves; in the lower middle of the scroll between her date of birth and date of death is a single rose; the scroll reads as follows: SOMERS, MARY E. (GREGG), NOV. 22 1907 – FEB. 21 2003.
