Shoots Wife, Then Suicides. W. S. Bryant Commits Murderous Deed at His Home Tuesday Afternoon--His Wife Will Live

On Tuesday afternoon a tragedy took place in Fort Benton when W. S. Bryant, incensed over domestic troubles, fired two shots from a .38 calibre revolver in a vain effort to kill his wife, then turned the weapon upon himself and fired, the bullet passing directly through the heart. Mrs. Bryant is now in the hospital and attending physicians say her life will be saved. Both bullets penetrated her body but did not affect the vital organs.

Causes leading up to the trouble were the result of hostile relations between the man and wife which had been brooding for some time, and persons acquainted with the family state that former threats had been made. Continuous controversies led to the filing of an action for divorce by Mrs. Bryant, and this decree has been in the court for some time and would have come up at the coming term this month. Six children were born to the family, all of whom are living, the oldest child being 21 years of age.

Immediately after the shooting Mrs. Bryant was able to run to the neighboring house, where the news of the tragedy was made known, and Mr. Bryant was found dead when parties returned to the home, the self-inflicted wound taking immediate effect. Mr. Bryant is said to be a pioneer in this section, and has wide acquaintance throughout the county. The family also lived in the vicinity of Highwood for a considerable period.

The funeral of Mr. Bryant was held yesterday afternoon and the remains were interred in the local cemetery.
