in 1973 Mrs Gertrude (McLASKEY) COLLIS PAUL of Waterford, Michigan, a granddaughter of Charles and Gertrude (POLLARD) SPILMAN, wrote a letter to William L DeCoursey of Minneapolis, Minnesota, as follows:

"I am one of the family. Sue NUTTING was my mother's favorite cousin. Her mother was Alice (SPILMAN) LAVERTY, a sister of Aunt Mat (America SPILMAN MEARS). While they were alive, mama saw a lot of them. Living where you do & we lived so all of our lives, so we didn't see too much of the DeCOURSEYs. You know, Fred MEARS (Jr.) lived, when in town, close to us so we saw a lot of them, especially after he married Molly (3) and there is no mention of Freda (MEARS), a darling girl, but I saw a lot of them in my day. I'm 75. I used to hear from Marion NUTTING (Marion DALE) and Doris NUTTING, but after my husband died I came to Michigan to be near my son who has an executive position with General Motors. Mama, Mary (SPILMAN) McLASKEY, had a brother named Alanson, not Perry, to my knowledge. The family in Annandale were grandpa Charley's sister and husband. George and I retired to the lake and were there until he died. Of course I am Gertrude, named after Grandma Gertie (POLLARD) SPILMAN. The boys are in rotation, Charley, Frank and Clarence, all deceased. Frank's son lives near you or did until he passed away. No children. He lived with his mother there. --- My two sons are gone. Bill with an operation - Lt. Colonel; and Jack killed in the war. Charles is here with his 3 daughters. One out of college - a teacher, and on in college and one about to finish high school. (He was a Navy man.) I never knew too much about Uncle Ped. He had no children I know and might just be Perry Alanson SPILMAN. My great grandfather died in the old soldier's home out near Minnehaha. He had stayed with us off and on, I remember as a child. He was in the Civil War until his feet gave out. --- I met Mason MEARS' wife in Hudson's (department store in Minneapolis) some years ago. --- Clarence McLASKEY was chief of detectives for some years in Minneapolis before retiring. He has been gone for some years, also his wife. No children. We'll never die out though. I have 5 great grandchildren, two girls and 3 boys, so we march on. - Gertrude Mary Paul."
