Farris, Frederick Arthur lived. He had a profound impact on the lives of those who were fortunate to know and love him. Born on a farm, in Evanston, Wyoming March 28, 1926 to Claudia Burson and F.J. Roybal, his schooling took him from a one room school house to the halls of Willamette University and the University of Minnesota where he earned his Bachelor's of Science in Aeronautical Engineering in 1946 and later to George Washington University Law School where his Juris Doctorate degree was achieved in 1955. While many changes were taking place across our county in 1943, his desire to support our country encouraged him to enlist in the United States Navy, at just seventeen years of age and as a result of his dedication to his education was commissioned as an Ensign in 1946; achieving the rank of Commander in July of 1964. He retired from active service in 1972. He proudly served our country as a naval aviator, instructor at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, and in the Office of Judge Advocate General. During the course of his naval career he received the Naval Aviator Insignia, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, China Service Medal, American Campaign Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He also received a Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one star and OED I.D. Badge. He traveled to China, Thailand, the Philippine Islands and other points in the Pacific, taking his family with him when he was able.
Besides serving his country he ran a tight ship at home, instilling patriotism and Christian values. Married to Mary Alice Schmucker, of Englewood, Colorado in 1948, who preceded him in death. He was a beloved father to two daughters, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. His daughters, Claudia Rae Farris-Thomas and Ruth Ann Sentz, niece Pamela Arlene Rogers and their families: Hannah Beth Thomas, James Luke Thomas, Austin Dale Butler, Randy Thomas Combs, Conner Thomas Combs, Maddison Ann Combs, Shannon Jo Thomas, Sammi Lynn Keen, Richard Charles Sentz, Robert Thomas Sentz, Adam Charles Sentz, Corey Elizabeth Sentz, Bonnie Lynn Sentz, Theodore Samuel Sentz, Greta Kimberly Sentz, Ransom Peter Sentz, Jerome Thomas Pyle Sentz, Cathlin Ann Sentz , Eleanor Evelyn Sentz and Roy Rogers. He was preceded in death by sisters, Barbara Mae Roybal and Kathleen Farris.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Annapolis. Professionally, he was a member of the Court of Military Appeals, Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, Virginia Bar Association, Order of the Coif and George Washington Law Review. Following his retirement from the service, he worked for the State of Maryland Judiciary, in the Administrative Office of the Courts and Adeleco, performing title searches.
It is difficult to summarize a lifetime in just a few paragraphs: a love of fishing, flying and football were also passed down. Many midshipmen passed through his home in Annapolis, as he and his wife were sponsors, always opening their doors to mentor and guide plebes. Navy game days were never missed and the sounds of a football game will long be associated with him.
Services are to be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1300 West Street, Annapolis, Maryland on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 2pm, with visitation at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, Maryland on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Pallbearers will include Richard Sentz, J. Luke Thomas, Randy Combs, Tony Carey, Sean Davis and Danial Burdette. He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
