Hazel Lee was born in Byrd Rankin, Texas, to the late William Lee Dyess and Lovelle Sprouse Dyess. She graduated from Bardwell High School in 1944. On October 28, 1949, Hazel married Walter Neal Goodwin, and they made their home in Ennis, Texas. She worked for the Ennis Independent School District for several years as a Secretary. In the early 1970's, Hazel began a successful career with Avon where she was a member of the President's Club and Honor Society for her sales achievements. She dearly loved her customers, and many of them became lifelong friends. Hazel loved her family and always had a smile on her face, never meeting a stranger. She was a member of Baylor Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. During the last year of her life, Hazel lived at the IOOF Nursing Home. Because of her outgoing and spunky personality, she quickly became known as the "Social Butterfly" where she enjoyed playing Bingo and Dominos with her friends and going on outings with the Red Hatters.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, on May 14, 2011.
Survivors include son, Bill Goodwin and wife, Sharon, of Ennis; daughter, Janice Wright and husband, Gary, of Ennis; grandsons, Blake Goodwin, of Cedar Park, Texas and fiancée, Ginger Stafford McWilliams and daughter, Connelley, of Austin, and Scott Goodwin and wife, Kim, of Round Rock; great-granddaughter, Karlie Ann Goodwin, of Round Rock; brother-in-law, W.R. "Bill" Dyess and wife, Sandra, of Ennis; nieces, Anna Dyess Oakley and Emilie Dyess Stewart; and her caregiver and special friend, Alice Lewis, of Garrett, Texas. N14
