John Russ (1802-1875) and his brother Stephen Russ (1810 - 1884) settled in Robeson Co., NC, and raised large families there. They were from SC.

John Russ and family are listed on page 249 of Russ Family Genealogy II. Compiled by Mr. Herbert M. Russ of Texas in 1989. He traces this family back to John Russ(1612-1691) and wife Margaret Russ of Massachusetts. Mr. Russ also submitted an article on John Russ and his brother, Stephen in "Our Heritage-Robeson Co., NC 1748-2002; published 2003 pg. 417. He states that the Russ family was buried in the Russ Family Cemetery located on their plantation near Ten Mile Creek.


John Russ's birth and death deaths were approximated from the Federal Census.

His gravemarker cannot be located. On his son, Rubin's death certificate, it states that Rublin was buried in a Davis Cemetery . This cemetery is located in Howellsville Twp., Robeson Co., NC where they were listed on the 1850,1860,1870 Federal Census. In the 1870 census the Russ was misspelled-Rup- in the printed form on Ancestry. In the 1850 Federal Census, John was 47 years of age, his occupation was a Cooper and he was born in South Carolina.


In the 1860 Robeson Co., NC Court Minutes, John Russ is listed on the 1859 Tax List in White Oak Swamp . He owned 66 1/3 acres valued at $150.00. His brother, Stephen Russ is listed in South Ten Mile Swamp on 190 acres valued at $1,365.00. Franklin Roberts who married John Russ's daughter, Mahally/Allie Russ, is listed between Stephen and John Russ on So. White Oak Swamp on 100 acres valued at $130.00.
