She had fought ovarian cancer since August 2010 and was under hospice care for the last few months of her life.
The daughter of Sam and Wilma Crowder Kemp, Joy was born February 22, 1950 in Trenton, Missouri.
She was united in marriage to Milan native Glen Richard Richardson in 1972 in Spickard, Missouri. They divorced in 1989 in Milan.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents.
Her survivors include daughter Alison Bush (Kyle) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; son Brant Richardson (Missi) of Norfolk, Nebraska; sisters Sondra Carroll (Tom) of Punta Gorda, Florida and Cheryl Kemp of Kirksville, Missouri; and grandchildren Taylor Renee Richardson of Milan, Ella, Sophia and Brooklyn Bush of Highlands Ranch and Hayden Sue and Connor Richardson of Norfolk. Growing up in the Spickard community, Joy attended school there graduating with the class of 1968. She continued her education at Trenton Junior College in Trenton and at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri where she received her bachelor's degree in elementary education in the spring of 1972. A few years later she received certification in remedial reading at Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. A 31-year teaching career began in the fall of 1972 when Joy accepted an elementary position in her hometown school. The following year she was hired by Milan C-2 School and spent the remainder of her teaching days in the district's elementary school. She taught second and third graders and was the remedial reading teacher for a number of years. School retirement came in 2003. That fall Joy began working part-time at Milan City Hall. She kept that job until spring of 2013 when her health failed. At the time of death, Joy was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa (teachers' sorority), the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and the Philanthropic Educational Organization. She also enjoyed the Red Hatters group. A faithful Christian, Joy belonged to Christ Community Church of Milan. Over the years, her church life included being Sunday school teacher and working with Vacation Bible School. Joy's hobbies included collecting snowmen, Easter rabbits and her favorite - pigs. She had lots of fun hunting for those porcine figurines. Joy enjoyed working in the yard and in her flower beds in the summer time. She liked to read, enjoyed her grandchildren and loved going places, doing things and just socializing with her many, many friends.
Funeral services were held for Joy, 1:00 PM, Sunday, January 19, 2014, at Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan. Pastor Andy Woods officiated.
Music was provided by the Praise Team Singers, and Mary Susan Scott.
Cremation followed afterward and an inurnment will take place a later date at Oakwood Cemetery. Per Joy's request cremation will follow after the funeral services, and the cremains will be interred in the Scattering Garden at the Oakwood Cemetery in Milan at a later date.
