U. James Richard was born in Basile, Louisiana to Laddie Richard and Ivy (Langley) Richard. He graduated from Basile High School in 1950, where he lettered in football, basketball and track.

After graduation, he and a childhood friend enlisted in the U.S. Navy days after the outbreak of the Korean Conflict. While serving in the Navy, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation.

James officiated basketball games with the LHSAA for 28 years, as well as college games in the old Gulf States Conference. He had the honor to officiate the Boys High School Top 20 on 4 occasions and the Girls Sweet Sixteen 3 times. He also umpires high school, American Legion and Babe Ruth baseball for 12 years.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Laddie and Ivy (Langley) Richard, his step-mother, Ozema (Fruge') Richard, sister, Leatrice "Lee" Didelot (Mem #124445937), and infant daughter, Phoebe.

He is survived by his three sons, Benny (and wife, Patsy), Kent (and wife Gaby), and Chad; three daughters, Liz (and husband, Kenneth), Kay (and husband, Darwin), and Louise (and husband, Ray); 17 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Deola (and husband, Claude), Leola (and husband, James Ray), Margie (and husband, Doy "Red"), and Julia (and husband, David); and his loving companion, Betty.

Viewing and Rosary on January 28, 2014 at Johnson & Robison Funeral Home in Sulphur, Louisiana. Services will be held at 11:00 am on January 29, 2014, with burial to follow.
