Ira Verner (also seen as Isa) was the son of Bert Conkright, and Bert's first wife Nettie J. Slaughter, who married in Pike County, Illinois on 25 November 1888. Nettie died of typhoid fever in 1902.

In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Horace Bert and his wife were found living in Missouri in the household of Nettie's father. Her mother had died in 1898. The Conkright family lived in Pike County by the time of the 1910 Census.

The 1917-1918 World War I Draft Registration for Vernie shows that he was a resident (at the time called "inmate") at the State Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois, which is most likely his place of death in 1919.
