Wayne W. Whitaker, 87, Emporia, died Friday morning at Flint Hills Care Center. He was 87.

A complete obituary with service times will be announced later. Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home has the arrangements.

Funeral services for Wayne W. Whitaker will be held at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Lee Hoskins. Interment will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, with military honors by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Masonic Rites will be presented by Emporia Masonic Lodge #12, A.F. & A.M.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, January 31, 2014 from 7:00 until 8:00 at the funeral home.

Mr. Whitaker, 87, died Friday, January 24, 2014 at Flint Hills Care Center, Emporia.

Wayne Wade Whitaker was born on April 30, 1926 in Liberty County, Texas, the son of James and Neola (Baldwin) Whitaker. He married Jean M. Pendergraft in Emporia on May 31, 1949. She died November 25, 2006.

Mr. Whitaker is survived by his daughter, Gay Clark, and her husband, Randy, of Emporia, and grandchildren, Aaron and Kendra Clark.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; a son, Gary W. Whitaker, who died May 25, 2000; three brothers, Fred, Curtis, and James Whitaker; and a sister, Phyllis Fisher.

Wayne received his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the former College of Emporia. He worked a number of years as the manager of Reeble's South, then later was Personnel Director at Sauder Industries, both in Emporia.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Emporia. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in the North African Theater, and was a member of the American Legion.

Wayne was a member and Past Master, having recently received his 50 year pin, of Emporia Masonic Lodge #12, A.F. & A.M. and a member and Past Patron of Miriam Chapter #14, Order of the Eastern Star.

A memorial has been established for the Emporia State University Lady Hornets Basketball Team, with contributions sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
