Joshua Brittain Gardner Sr. was born 1 Apr 1775 in Northampton County, North Carolina, the son of Nathan Garner Sr. (Revolutionary War Patriot A044079) and Sarah ? Garner. Their surname of Gardner was also spelled Garner, Gardiner, Gardener. Nathan Garner Sr. moved his family to Williamson County, Tennessee where he, Brittain Sr., and son Nathan Garner Jr. were in numerous business deals buying and selling land. They are also listed in business transactions in Davidson County and Maury County, Tennessee. J. Brittain Gardner Sr. is listed as a Pioneer of Maury County, Tennessee as he was there at its beginning in 1807. Joshua Brittain Gardner Sr. married Emily Millicent Darden 28 Jan 1804.

Rev. Joshua Brittain Gardner Sr. was a well known early Primitive Baptist minister who traveled over a large area around his home county. In the 1820s, he purchased 300 acres of land on Leipers Creek Rd. He donated land for a church to be built and he often baptized members in Leipers Lick Creek across from his house.

Narcissa Gardner married Granville Milton Johnson in 1821.
