Mildred Henderson Cunningham, a native of Florence, Alabama, passed away on January 23, 2014 in Birmingham. Mrs. Cunningham was born on September 25, 1924. She lived her entire life in Florence until the passing of her husband in 2009 at which time she moved to Birmingham to be near her daughter. She graduated from Coffee High School and Florence State Teachers College, now the University of North Alabama. After graduation, she served as Secretary to the Dean at Florence State until retiring in 1954 to become a full-time homemaker. She was a member of Wood Avenue Church of Christ and its predecessor, Poplar Street Church of Christ.
Mrs. Cunningham enjoyed sewing, having been a member of several sewing clubs through the years, baking for and entertaining her grandchildren and getting together with friends for lunch and fellowship. She was a wonderful Christian witness to her family and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Visitation will be at Greenview Memorial Funeral Home on January 26 at 1:30 pm. A memorial service will follow the visitation at 3:30 pm with burial at Greenview Memorial Cemetery with Bro. Kenneth Davis officiating.
Mrs. Cunningham was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Cunningham, III, her parents, George W. and Addie Carter Henderson, brother, John M. Henderson, and brother-in-law, Charles W. Berkebile.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Cunningham Putnam (Steve), of Birmingham, AL; a son, Robert Arthur Cunningham (Anne) of Jackson, MS; a sister, Edith Henderson Berkebile of Hartsville, SC; a sister-in-law, Jean K. Henderson of Franklin, TN; five grandchildren: Benjamin Scott Putnam of Birmingham, AL, William David Putnam of Auburn, AL, James Arthur Cunningham, M.D. and Elizabeth Anne Campbell Cunningham of Jackson, MS, Catherine Corinne Cunningham Cranford, M.D. (Alden) of Chapel Hill, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Wood Avenue Church of Christ, Childhaven, or your favorite charity.
