Robert Lee "R.L." Gambill, age 95, of 1473 NC Hwy. 93, Sparta, NC died Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was born on June 13, 1917 in Alleghany County to the late Robert Lee "Bob" and Minnie McMillan Gambill. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Fowler Gambill; one son, Bobby Joe Gambill; one brother, James Gambill; two sisters, Zenna Richardson and Fairy Gambill. He is survived by three grandchildren, Greg Gambill and wife Jill of Sparta, Kristen Gambill of Wilmington, Bradford Gambill and wife Mary Beth of Sparta; two great-grandchildren, Hope Gambill and Zoe Gambill both of Sparta; one sister, Vivian Weaver of Sparta; one daughter-in-law, Susie Gambill of Sparta; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Elk Creek Cemetery in Sparta. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Susie Gambill, 609 Shiloh Church Road, Sparta, NC. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Elk Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o Joel Souther, 189 Farmers Fish Camp Road, Sparta, NC 28675.
