Anna Lee Lankford Betts was the daughter of Lemuel and Opal Greer Lankford. She attended Grant Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas, and continued her education at Holy Epiphany School in Leavenworth, Kansas. She also attended Queen of the World, which was the start of her professional nursing career.

After graduating from Sumner High School in 1957, Anna married her high school sweetheart, John Betts, and the couple had two sons. She attended the Kansas City, Kansas, Community College registered nursing program and graduated on the Dean's Honor Roll. Anna was a lifelong member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She became a well-known and well-respected Registered Nurse, with thirty-three years of nursing service at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She retired in 2004.

Dubbed the "Pink Warrior," Anna participated in the Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure" for fifteen years and became one of KU Med Cancer Center's most memorable volunteers. She was also involved in her parish church, Saint Monica's Catholic Church. Anna was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the Health Care Ministry and the Magic Genealogy organization.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandmother, Anna "Muj" O'Banner; sister, Catherine "Cat" Lankford; husband, John Betts, Sr.; sister, Miriam Pearl, and granddaughter, Sha'drea "PooPhpee" Bazart. She was survived by two sons, three sisters, a brother, four granddaughters, four nieces and six nephews.
