Walter "Wally" Best, 72, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005. His family lost its best friend, husband, Dad, Grampa and brother.
Wally was born June 15, 1933, in Butte, to Richard and Mildred Best. After high school he served in the Army from July 7, 1950, to July 9, 1953.
He owned and operated a service station on the corner of Rodney and 11th in Helena. Later he purchased "Wally's Place" in Deer Lodge with his wife Gayll. Friends were very important to Wally and he was known for a good time and numerous stories. After selling Wally's Place, he went to work selling cars for Shamrock and Ed's, but his greatest love, fly-fishing, was encouraging him to retire to the Jefferson River, which he did and enjoyed every minute of it.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Leslie and Junie.
Survivors include his wife, Gayll; son, Ty J Best of Missoula; daughters, Debbie and Tim Hansen of Silver Star, Heidi and Scott Bernhardt of Butte, Patti and Jim Harrison of Bozeman, Cherie Frick of Great Falls; grandchildren, Mike and Brittni Hubbard, Haylee Lammi, Heath Hansen, Chris, Sharon and Jamie Harrison, Rebekah, Molly and Casey Frick; brothers, Don and Margaret Best of Deer Lodge, and Melvin Best of Great Falls.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a gathering of family and friends at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Silver Star home.
Wally always said to his children, "It doesn't cost anything to smile, wave or say hello." "Dad we all love you and will miss you." Memorials: charity of the donor's choice.
K&L Mortuaries of Twin Bridges is handling arrangements.
