Howard Gray Hopkins, 87, passed away January 19, 2014 in Lubbock.
He was born November 24, 1926 in Dodd City Texas to Charlie Doss and Lona Viola (Jones) Hopkins.
Howard married Billye Ann Downing on May 23, 1947 in Bonham, TX. He worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Co in Lubbock for 30 years and Westex Beverage until retirement in 1986. He played guitar and sang as "Merle Haggard" at the Meadow Musical for 35years. Howard was a deacon and song leader in his home church, Redbud Baptist Church in Lubbock. He not only sang in his home church but in various other Baptist churches in and around the West Texas region.
Survivors include his wife of 66 ½ years, Billye Ann; son, Tony Hopkins of Haskell, TX; daughter Rebecca Youngblood of Lubbock; sister, Pearl Evans of Bonham, TX; grandchildren, Adam and Nikki Dickerson of Austin, Cody and Christina of Fort Worth, Cory Hopkins of Frisco, TX and Mia Hopkins of Rowlett, TX; step-granddaughter, Karlee Warren of Lubbock; great-grandchildren, Kriss, Kiara and Briana Perkins of Frisco, TX, Jordan Paul Dickerson and Gavin Howard Dickerson of Fort Worth, TX; step-great-grandchildren Denise and Gabriel Jiminez, Tatyana, Amalya, Alberto and Celestine Gobea of Fort Worth, TX; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Velva Spiller and brother Leeman Hopkins.
Visitation will be Friday January 24, 2014 in Resthaven Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Graveside services will be Saturday January 25 at 11:00 am in the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Adam Dickerson, Cody Dickerson, Cory Hopkins, Mike Warren, Mike Carraway and Joe McElroy.
