HISTORY AND FAMILIES, BROWN COUNTY, OHIO 1818-1993, pg. 233: The Campbell clan is a large one, and has many branches. Though often referred to as Scotch-Irish, the Ulster Scotch are not of Irish descent but emigrated from the western lowland of Scotland to Ulster, Ireland, in the 17th century. Driven by famine and disease, they came in large numbers to Virginia around 1718; many settled in the Shenandoah Valley.
Early family records show that Robert Campbell lived in Monongalia County, VA, and that he was killed in an Indian raid there in 1786.
In 1800, Robert's son William married Sarah Strait, the daughter of Jacob Strait and Elizabeth Dragoo Strait. William and Sarah were both born in 1781. About 1839, they brought their family of eight to Ohio by flatboat. They settled in Arnheim, Franklin Township, Brown County, and lived there until their death. William's age at death 68y 11m 1d.
