Charles was in the US Army serving as a crypto specialist in Europe and Turkey during the 1960s. He attended Parsons College in Fairfield, IA. In 1972, he began a career in forensic science at the New Jersey State Police laboratory in West Trenton and was able to transfer to the new regional laboratory at Troop A Headquarters, Hammonton in 1973. While in the laboratories he was in the Drug Analysis Unit and the Toxicology Unit. He retired in 1996 to vacation in Hawaii with his wife Lee, to work on his woodworking hobby and doing cryptograms in the newspapers.
