James Melvin Murphy Sr., 77, of Villa Dr., was dead on arrival at Moses Cone Hospital Tuesday after a sudden illness. A retired car inspector for Southern Railway he attended College Place Methodist Church and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.
Surviving are his widow, the former Mary Sue Strader; daughter, Mrs. Louis J. Nienaber of Greensboro; sons, M. J. Murphy Jr. of Greensboro and Gene Gilbert of Mount Prospect Ill., sisters, Mrs. Sue Embler of Thomasville, Mrs. Hazel Johnson and Mrs. R. M. Kelly, both of High Point; and his brother, Charles Murphy of Thomasville.
Funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel with the Rev. Bernard Hurley, pastor of College Place Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Baptist Church.
