"DEATH CLAIMS AGED RESIDENT
Lars Hegland died at his home in this city on Friday, Jan. 29, after an illness of but two days. At the time of his death he had reached the advanced age of 83 years, 2 months and 25 days.
Mr. Hegland was born in Skaanevik, Norway, Nov. 4, 1831. He grew to manhood in Norway and while there he followed the carpenter trade and also worked for a time as blacksmith. In 1854 he journeyed to America, coming to Illinois, where he took up the vocation of farming. Two years later he came to Iowa and after having been here a short time he settled on a farm east of town.
In the summer of the year 1863 he married Miss Alice Johnson. Mrs. Hegland became stricken and died the following year. Two years later he was joined in marriage to Miss Anna Nelson and to this union ten children were born, nine of whom have preceded their father in death. Burdened with the sorrow of the loss of his children he was again called upon to face a deep bereavement in the death of his worthy helpmate.
On the 20h day of July, 1882, he was married to Guro Hegland at Roland. Rev. Jacobson performed the ceremony. They lived on the farm until seventeen years ago, when they moved to Roland, where they have since lived in retirement. Six children were born to them, four of whom have passed away.
Mr. Hegland affiliated himself with Bergen's church when he came here to live and since then he has remained faithful to the doctrines of that denomination.
Mr. Hegland came here with his folks when this vicinity was but sparsely settled and when the stern realities of early pioneer life were met and conquered by such energetic and intrepid young men as he. The early labors of such manly men of the plains are manifesting themselves in the marked progress of our time. But he is gone! Another name has been stricken from the ever-lessening roll of our old settlers.
The funeral services were conducted from the Bergen's church Wednesday, Feb. 3. A large gathering of relatives and friends came to pay their last respects to the deceased. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. G. Smedal. He was buried in the Roland cemetery.
He is mourned by his wife and three daughters, Mrs. P. M. Martens, Mrs. Joseph Twedt and Mrs. T. A. Rorem, Sask., Canada. His four brothers, S. O. Hegland and Mike Hegland, and one sister, Mrs. Jens Ritland."
