Born in Brooklyn, Grandpa was raised in Augusta, Maine. He was a Sharp Shooter in the Maine National Guard, served in the Navy as a "gun-pointer", and homesteaded near Silver Lake, Oregon. His was also a machinist and entrepreneur in the trucking business. He relocated his famiy to Berkeley, CA during the depression after finding work in the Naval Shipyards. His later career involved selling MAC tools, and then he and Gram bought a ranch 20 miles south of Livermore on the Mines Road. That ranch fundamentally influenced my life, with wonderful horse and other livestock experiences, plus lessons in self-reliance. Thank you Grandpa Moncrief for creating a great place to learn to love the land and appreciate nature!
