He often told a story about how, sentenced to be be shot for desertion, he escaped the night before his date of execution. Running into Sherman's troops, he joined them and served under Union colors until Appomattox.
He married first a woman remembered only as Mary Jane and secondly, Sarah Elizabeth Hughes. Mary may have been Sarah's older sister per a family history.
He was buried in "the Confederate cemetery", a part of Porter Cemetery.
