Benjamin Hughes Adkins, 80, of Salem, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995. Mr. Adkins was born and raised in Danville. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1936. He worked for Westinghouse Electric Corp. for 42 years. He was also a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Garrett Adkins; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Bob Hill, Richmond; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Leo McMahon, Salem; son and daughter-in-law, Ben H. Jr. and Trisha Adkins; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Bo Hagen, Salem; fourteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers, Berkley G. Adkins, Danville, J. Reginald Adkins, Abilene , Kan.; sisters, Doris Pritchard, Farmville, Dorothy Young, Richmond. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, January 20, 1995 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem with Dr. Gregory L. Adkins of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Richmond, with Dr. Eugene R. Woolridge Jr., and Dr. Harold H. Fink, retired pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
