The Estimable Lady Laid to Rest in Metairie

One of the most estimable of the older generation of New Orleans women passed away on Tuesday in Hollins, Va., and was buried in this city yesterday afternoon. The lady was Mrs. Mary F. Hayward, wife of the well-known cotton press man. Mr. Sawyer Hayward. She was a native of Huntsville, Ala., being born in 1823. Her father was Colonel Wm. F. Burton, of Virginia.

Mrs. Hayward lived here ever since 1843, one year after her marriage to Mr. Hayward in Spring Hill, Ark. She was a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church during her residence in New Orleans, always taking a deep interest in religious affairs.

In 1892, Mr. and Mrs. Hayward celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their summer home in Mississippi City, and the occasion was made one of great rejoicing. All the children of the deceased lady were present, and the day was one of the happiest in her existence.

Mrs. Hayward was possessed of most amiable and lovable characteristics and though 75 years old and ill for some months past, she was uncomplaining and cheerful to the last. Everyone at the funeral yesterday, young and old, had a kind word and a grateful remembrance for her.

Three sons, Wm. B., Jas. G. [JAMES DANIEL HAYWARD] and Lucius H. Hayward, and one daughter, Mrs. T. Jones Stewart, survive their mother, beside the bereaved husband. Seventeen grandchildren also survive.

The funeral services were conducted at the residence, 1417 Annunciation Street, at 5 o'clock in the afternoon by Rev. Dr. Moore, the Episcopal minister. The interment was at Metairie.

The following served as pall-bearers; Messrs. Jas. DeBuys, John S. Rauney, Ashton Phelps, Fenner Henderson, W. C. H. Robinson and Ed Belknap.
