Hannah Maria is a daughter of a bricklayer, Thomas Eagles, who resided in the hamlet of Apperley, Deerhurst Parish, England. She was the fourth daughter of Ann Sparks of Apperley. Hannah Maria had ten known siblings, all of whom died in England, except one brother, Elias, who came to America and died in the Civil War.

Known as "Maria", she married Robert Harris Jr., who was raised in the parish of Deerhurst.

They were first wed in a civil ceremony, 18 March 1835, in the Methodist Church of Apperley and then an "official" ceremony at the Church of England, 28 Sep 1835, Saint Mary De Lode, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.

Robert and Maria first lived at Deerhurst, where Robert assisted his father in the raising of livestock. For the next five years, they resided in various small villages in the parish, where their first three children were born. They joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during this period.

They immigrated to America aboard the sailing vessel, The Echo, 16 February 1841. Their fourth child, Thomas Eagles Harris was born aboard that ship 29 March 1841, on the Atlantic Ocean. The little family, along with several other family members, arrived at the port of New Orleans 16 April 1841.

From there, the traveled to Nauvoo, Illinois where they resided until 1846, when her husband was called to serve in the Mormon Battalion.

Maria stayed behind, at Council Bluffs, Iowa with her children and sister-in-law to suffer the hardships they all faced.

Robert's history details the rest of their lives.
