Dorothea was the daughter of Marion and Elsie (Coulter) McQuiston and sister of Elizabeth. She was born in Israel Township, Preble County, Ohio, and later moved to Oxford, Ohio. Dorothea graduated from Christ Hospital School of Nursing in 1933.
