In 1950, she received her nursing degree from Hotel Dieu Nursing Program in New Orleans. She met William E. "Bill" Smith, the love of her life, while he was in LSU Medical School and thus began their courtship and marriage of 58 years. Although she was a trained medical professional, Gay most enjoyed her role as the ultimate homemaker, busy with five children and all of their activities.
She was a longtime member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and served as a sponsor for catechumens. She also served on several committees for her church, most notably sewing colorful aprons which were the hit of the annual St. Aloysius Fair. She was an extraordinary cook, as it was often said she had the best kitchen in town! Gay enjoyed traveling abroad, but most looked forward to regular trips she and Bill made to New Orleans, where they ate good food and collected beautiful pieces for their home. Gay was happiest at the beach with her family and dearest friends, creating some of her most treasured memories. She was quite a talented gardener who looked forward to springtime when she could dig in the dirt. Bill joined her in the love of gardening and always kept her supplied with beautiful flowers. Later in life, Gay loved to play bridge with several groups she lovingly referred to as "the girls". Recently, she received her 50-year pin in recognition of her service to the Baton Rouge Medical Auxiliary. Gay's faith was ever strong. Her love of Christ and her church were very important constants in her life. Her family and friends are grateful to have received the love of such a humble and special lady.
Gay is survived by her husband, William E. Smith, M.D.; a daughter, Shannon Smith Heully; and sons, Todd Smith and Shane Smith, all of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Sarah Anderson, of Chicago, and Casey Anderson, of Costa Rica, and their father, Bob Anderson; brother, Charles Curet, of Pascagoula, Miss.; and sister, Laurie Saucier, of Pearl River.
She was predeceased by her parents; daughter, Laurie Smith Anderson; son, Scott Smith; brother, George Curet; and sister, Carolyn Pfister.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Regina McPherson and Hospice of Baton Rouge for the love and caring support of Gay and her family.
