Lysander married Clarinda Upham on December 17, 1835. They had nine children, including Francis, Charles Asa, John Lovell, and Viette.

About 1834, Lysander began work as a blacksmith in Ascutneyville, forging farm implements, cutlery, and knives. He later worked for Robbins & Lawrence Company in Windsor, Vermont, a manufacturer of military arms. In 1851, Robbins & Lawrence began manufacturing a new breechloading rifle for Christian Sharps Company. Lysander was asked to create the first parts for the new rifles, based on the original paper plans.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Lysander became a contractor for the Providence Tool Company, of Rhode Island.

After Clarinda passed away, Lysander lived in Massachusetts part of the year, with some of his sons.

Some sources suggest Lysander served his community as postmaster and as an officer of the Vermont State Prison in Windsor.
