1933 - 2014
"A reflection of a life well lived"
Lalia, 80 years young, was born in her beautiful home state of Kentucky in 1933 and passed on into eternal peace at home in Pensacola, Florida on January 19, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her husband, Jess L. Reed, daughter Kelly West and granddaughter Leyla West was at her side during her passing.
Lalia first arrived in Pensacola, Florida with me in 1954 while I was undergoing Navy pilot training. She has been collecting her wings of gold all these years and has gracefully been lifted up to Heaven.
During her first two years in Pensacola, she worked at Baptist Hospital as a registered nurse in the operating room. She served as a public health nurse for the state of Florida and later became the owner/broker of Reed-Reed & Associates, Inc. real estate. She was elected as the Florida real estate/broker of the year by a National Relocation Center.
Lalia loved her church and served at President of the Trustees for the Perdido Bay United Methodist Church during their founding years.
She lived her faith !
Lalia was a fiercely independent, highly protective and loving mother, wife, grandmother and loyal friend to all who knew her. She was a woman who loved well, took care of those she loved, and had an unabashed love for her friends and neighbors. Lalia was that and more!
She was extremely proud of her service as a Navy wife and had friends scattered throughout the world. We often joked that she was the "Queen of the Universe" because she seemed to have a connection to everyone on the planet and I truly feel that she is now in her rightful place.
She found great joy in watching all sports, especially her beloved Louisville Cardinals. On occasion, she would join me and support my Kentucky Wildcats, but never when they were playing each other.
Lalia lived life well and in doing so, left a blessing behind for all who knew her. Her ability to love so intensely let you know that you were very special in her life. She was everyone's favorite aunt, cousin, friend or neighbor.
She was "Miss Lalia" !
She was blessed with a "Megawatt" smile and a generous spirit.
She will be especially remembered for her dedication to her family and church, her determination, self reliance and her strong-mindness of conviction.
Those who knew and loved her have been enriched by her nurturing and thoughtful manner.
She gently touched our lives with her presence and left us forever changed. We shared only a moment with her but will remember her for an eternity.
Lalia was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Reed Clayton. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Jess L. Reed, her daughter, Kelly Reed West and husband Shawn of Navarre, Florida, her four grandchildren, Jessica W. Clayton (Portsmouth, VA), Anna Lucille Clayton (Richmond, VA), Leyla Alexandria West (Pensacola, Florida) and Cameron West of Pensacola. Her sisters Imogene Wesner (Lexington, KY), Audrey Brown (Seymour, IN), Carolyn Brucie Demas ( Columbus, IN.) and her brother Walter Wilson of Crestwood, Ky.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 23 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Oak Lawn funeral home located at 619 New Warrington Road, Pensacola, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, Lalia would like for donations to be made to the American Cancer Society in her memory.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Perdido Bay United Methodist Church at 13660 Innerarity Point Road on Friday, January 24 at 11:00 AM.
Rev. Gary Black of Southland Christian Church, Lexington, Kentucky,
Rev. Hugh Brooks of North Port, FL, and Rev., Darren McClellan of the Perdido Bay United Methodist Church of Pensacola will officiate.
Internment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida.
Pall Bearers are Bill McLendon, Neil Comstock, Charles McGary, Richard Ezell, Cameron West, and Mark Keaney. Arrangements are entrusted to Oak Lawn Funeral Home.
