Edward Keator, 77, chairman of the board of directors and former president of the Cortland Trust company, died Friday morning at the home of his son, Thomas Keator, at Hamburg. The remains were brought to Cortland that night and the funeral was held Monday forenoon at the Keator residence, 76 North Main street.
Honorary bearers were O. U. Kellogg, Edward Alley, Justice R. L. Davis, Frank J. Peck, F. A. Purchas, and A. H. Wolcott. The active bearers were Albert Haskell, George Garrity, J. Leon Beaudry, Harry Blythe, John W. Morgan, and H. K. Alexander.
Mr. Keator leaves his wife, Mrs. Harriet J. Keator; a daughter, Mrs. Norman Graff of Orchard Park, N. Y.; and two sons, O. Porter Keator of Cortland and Thomas Keator of Hamburg. The latter is a prominent banker of Buffalo. His sister surviving him is Mrs. Mary K. Chadbourne of Cortland.
Mr. Keator had been in ill health in recent years, which caused his retirement from the presidency of the Trust company. Lately he has been at the home of his son near Buffalo.
Edward Keator was born at Roxbury, N. Y., April 14, 1852. He was educated in the Claverack training school and the Quaker school at Union Springs, and was a printer's apprentice in the office of the Cortland Democrat.
His father, the late Thomas Keator, was first president of the First National bank of Cortland, established in 1863, which became the Cortland Trust company a few years since. Edward Keator began a clerkship in the bank in 1869, was elected cashier in 1882, and became president in 1889, succeeding his older brother, Samuel Keator, who had been president since the death of Thomas Keator in 1879.
Mr. Keator was a member of Cortlandville lodge, F. and A. M., since 1881.
