Older brother of Dauphin, The two lived with John Brown for a time in North Elba. During the raid on Harpers Ferry he was seized by the crowd upon offering a flag of truce, then dragged away and shot in the head. His body was thrown into the river and used as target practice by drunken townspeople until Marines arrived to restore order later that night. Thompson was originally buried in Loudon Heights, Virginia, along with his brother Dauphin, and Oliver Brown, The three were later moved to their current resting place on Aug. 30, 1899, along with several others who died during the raid on Harpers Ferry.
