Actor. He began his career on stage in 1895, and remained true to this profession till his death. His first picture was "Der Student von Prag" (13), where he played a double role. But he is fondly remembered for his film "Der Golem" (1914) in the title role. With this movie he started a trilogy "Der Golem und die Tänzerin" (1917) and "Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam" (1920). He also appeared in in "Svengali" (1927), "Alraune" (1927) and "Unheimliche Geschichten" (1932). He had his last film part in the movie "Der grosse Mandarin" (48). In July 1948 he reprised his role of "Nathan the Wise" at the Deutschen Theatre, but in the first scene he collapsed and the curtain was brought down. Two months later, he died in his sleep. He was buried in a quiet corner of the Berlin cemetery at Heerstrasse where a Chinese temple-stone bears his name and a marble Buddah from his own back garden protects his grave.
