Musette Terry-Burkett, 88, of Portales died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at Laurel Ridge Healthcare in Clovis.
She was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Mexia, Texas, to Burr and Maggie Nichols Kennedy. She married Bob W. Terry Aug. 26, 1933, in Portales. They lived, farmed and operated a dairy west of Portales. She was employed by Portales Drug, J.C. Penney Co, and Anthony's in Portales. She married James Burkett on Nov. 3, 1974, in Portales. She participated as a voting poll judge for many years and also worked as a census-taker. She was one of the first six women allowed to serve jury duty under New Mexico law.
She was a member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ.
Family members said she loved playing dominoes with the senior citizens.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Vera Starr, Zella Faye Mahaffey and Joyce Contois; two brothers, Hollin Kennedy and Troy Kennedy; a grandson, Bob Gates; a son, Keith Terry; and her first husband and the father of all her children, Bob Terry, who died Mar. 24, 1969.
Survivors include her second husband, James Burkett of Denver, Colo.; a son, H.R. Terry (and wife, Nona Faye) of Portales; three daughters, Betty Musick (Gordon) of Lubbock, Mildred Gates (Monroe) of Clovis and Sharon Grider (Gary) of Clovis; a daughter-in-law, Judy Terry (Keith) of Portales; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Rex Kennedy of Fort Worth, Texas.
David Bennett will officiate services.
Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Stan Musick, Kerry Musick, Jim Gates, Harold, Michael, Danny, Karl and Jeff Terry, Steve Robertson and Mark Robertson.
All friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
