Actor. A native of Canada, he appeared in nearly 90 films during his 18-year career, mostly silent screen, and often in villainous roles. Born Samuel Alfred De Grasse, he trained to become a dentist. By 1910 he was a practicing dentist in Providence, Rhode Island and married British actress Ada Fuller Golden. In 1912 he decided to try his hand at acting and went to New York City where he appeared in his first motion picture. When fellow Canadian actress Mary Pickford set up her own studio with her husband Douglas Fairbanks, he decided to join them. Among his noted films include "The Birth of a Nation" (1915), "Intolerance" (1916), "Robin Hood" (1922), "The Courtship of Miles Standish" (1923), "The Eagle of the Sea" (1926), "The Black Pirate" (1926), "The King of Kings" (1927), and "The Man Who Laughs" (1928). His final film role was in "Captain of the Guard" (1930) and he then retired as an actor.
