Son of the American Revolution – Descendant of James Ledgerwood (Legerwood).

He was the son of Frank M. Dobson and Flora Curtner Dobson.
On June 25, 1941 as John William Dobson, he married Eloise McNeil Hendrix at the home of her parents in Greesboro, North Carolina. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Charles F. Myers, D.D., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro.
They were the parents of two children.

He was a graduate of the University of Richmond where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He then attended the United States Military Academy, graduating in 1939. He was also a 1931 graduate of the Culver Military Academy. During World War II he commanded the 1st Ranger Battalion known as Darby's Rangers until he was wounded and taken prisoner in Italy in 1944. He escaped the following year. He taught at the United States Military Academy and was a staff member of the United States Army War College. One of his military assignments was as the Senior United States Advisor to the NATO commander in Denmark. He was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Combat Infantry Badge. He retired from the United States Army in 1967 after 32 years of service. Prior to retirement he was the Deputy Director for Command Areas, for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He became the sixth Superintendent of Culver Military Academy from 1967 to 1969. After Culver he moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina where he engaged in thoroughbred breeding and racing. He was employed at Sea Pines Academy for five years as business manager, athletic director and golf coach. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Dobson. Survivors included his wife, Eloise Hendrix Dobson, a son and several grandchildren.
