Herman was orphaned at a very young age & had lived with several families in Purmo, Finland, where he was born. He immigrated to the United States in his 20s. Taught himself to read & write, Finnish, Swedish & English. He worked in the lumber camps & settled in the Felch area.
Anna Lena Mattson came to the United States with relatives in 1905. She worked as a cook in the lumber camp.
Herman & Anna were married the summer of 1905 & raised their family in the Felch area. They family attended the Felch Baptist church. Herman was a carpenter, farmed, lumberjack & for a short time worked at the Ford Motor Plant in Kingsford.
