Age 79 and a longtime resident of Albany, Elmer passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014 at North Oaks Medical Center. He worked as a millwright for many years, was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy. Elmer enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching his grandsons play sports.
Elmer leaves behind his son, Elmer Stewart, Jr. and wife Robin, along with his grandsons, whom he adored, Matthew, Andrew and Philip Stewart. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Elmer in death were his wife, Katie Foster Stewart; mother, Lillian Wheat Stewart; father and step-mother, Henry, Sr. and Nettie Rainey Stewart; siblings, W.K. Stewart, Edna Stewart Glascock, Henry Stewart, Jr. and Deloris Bernard Hughes.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, west of Hammond, on Friday, January 17, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, January 18, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until the religious services at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Joe Dunn will officiate the services and interment will follow in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.
