PHILIP S. COX, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.)
Passed at home in Springfield, VA on January 9, 2014 at the age of 92. Phil was born June 13, 1921 in Winnipeg, Canada of the Reverend Sidney and Violet Cox, Salvation Army. A graduate of Tech High in Atlanta, Phil received his BA in English and Journalism from Mercer University, Macon, Ga. in 1947 and his MA in International Law and Relations in 1955 from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. He served in the US Army Air Force in Europe during WWII as a communications officer and completed his Air Force career as a Special Assistant to Air Force Chiefs of Staff Generals Curtis E. LeMay and John P. McConnell. Following retirement he served on the technical staff of Schriever and McKee Associates and later as the Executive Assistant to the President of the American Security Council where Phil was the Managing Editor of the Washington Report and the International Security Review. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Gwendolyn Nottingham Cox, his three children; Gale, Robert and Lisa, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The viewing will be held at Fairfax Memorial, 9902 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, VA, Friday, January 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. The memorial service will be held at Greenspring Village Church, 7410 Spring Village Dr., Springfield, VA, Saturday, January 25 at 11 a.m. Burial services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
