Eugene was born in Nampa, Idaho. He came to Portland as a young boy and grew up in Eastmoreland and Tigard. Eugene attended Washington High School and then the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

Eugene married LaVerne Baurer, who preceded him in death in 1986. They had three children, Rodney Sharp of Topeka, Kansas, Sandra O'Neill (Eugene) of Portland, and Barry Sharp, who died in 1993; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Eugene was in the Air Force during World War II as a Bomber Pilot on B24 and B17 AirCrafts; he flew 46 combat missions in the South Pacific.

After the war he went to work for his father's accounting firm, Sharp & Young, starting as an outside auditor for Collins Pine. In 1956, he joined the firm, eventually becoming vice president and treasurer. He also served as president of Ostrander Construction, vice president of JT McDonald and Lakeview Logging. From 1981-1985, he served as vice chairman, Board of Trustees for Marylhurst College.

Eugene resided in Anacortes for many years where he was an avid golfer and later an active member in the local bowling league. He loved Anacortes taking daily walks through Washington Park and down to the water.

He returned to Portland in 2010 and passed away peacefully last November.
