Samuel Cole was one of ten children of Joseph C and Lucy J [Morey] Cole. Sam was only 12 years old when his father died suddenly. His mother didn't remarry and brought the children up alone. Frederick, the oldest, probably had to assume much of the head of house responsibilities. It was probably a difficult time for them. Sam married Miss Rebecca Jarvis, said to be "dau. of old Jarvis from Boston" 10 Oct 1855. He was listed as a sailor or sometimes a farmer. They had:

In 1863 he registered for the Civil War draft in Ipswich, MA. He registered to vote in DI, ME in 1866.

After Rebecca's death in 1902, Sam remarried:

24 Dec 1906 Sam m3 ( divorced) Emma Lydia St Clair previously Lydia E Hallowell 1846-1913 of Dixmont, ME, d/o Hiram Hallowell and Lucinda Durgin. ( Family lore: Sam m his housekeeper. He would tell people that she was trying to kill him. He d 31 Mar 1909. Emma was sole executrix of his will. He gave each of his 7 living children $1, Emma took everything else.)

He's buried next to his 1st wife Rebecca in the Old Deer Isle Cemetery on Rte. 15.
