Following her husband's premature death in 1854, her finances were dealt a further blow when the panic of 1857 swept away much of her Dwight family fortune. In response she built a house at 106 Boylston Stree in 1857/8 and opened a school. Later, she moved to Europe for a while with her two children where living was cheaper. In 1870 the US Census show her as living in Beverley, Mass., with two of her children children, and two servants. She did not list an occupation, but her net worth, including personal property and real estate, was given as $65,000. At the end of her life for a year and a half before her death she worked for the "Nation" magazine, writing book reviews of American fiction, while Henry James, Jr., wrote the reviews on foreign fiction. She lived at 16 Brimmer St.
