Herbert Melton Jr., 67, Rensselaer, died on April 10, 1993, at the Jasper County Hospital.
He was born on Dec. 2, 1925, in Patoka, Ill., to Herbert Walter Melton and Maude Tedrick Melton. He was raised by Walter and Rose Melton in Patoka, Ill.
He was married on April 16, 1947, in Monticello to Alice Mitchell, and she survives.
He was a retired construction laborer and worked out of Union Local 41 of Hammond for 45 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served aboard the U.S.S. Signas in the South Pacific.
He lived most of his life in the Monon-Rensselaer area and attended the former Lee United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the America Legion of Rensselaer.
He is survived by a son, Herbert Jeffrey Melton of Medaryville, four daughters, Sharon Melton of Lee, Karen Morris of Rensselaer, Joan Jeffrey of Lee, Cathy Walker of Rensselaer, five half-brothers, Don Melton of New Lenox, Ill., Kenneth Melton of Rocky Hill, Conn., Jim Melton of Monon, Luther Melton of Monon and Tom Melton of Monon, four half-sisters, Betty Sams of Francesville, Ruth Burks of Monon, Jane Garver of Monticello and Linda Melton of Monon, one brother, Bob Melton of Monon; eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by one half-sister and two brothers.
Services were held at the Kellogg Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 13, at 11 a.m. The Rev. David Cox officiatied and burial was in Miloy Park.
Memorials can be made to the Lee community Building.
