Funeral services for Darwin Nelson, age 70, of Clear Lake, SD will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 in the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, SD, South Dakota. Rev. Samuel Sunandkumar will officiate. Darwin passed away on Friday, December 11, 2009 in the Prairie Lakes in Watertown, SD.
Burial with military honors provided by the Charles Curry American Legion Post #49 of Clear Lake, SD will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake, SD. Pallbearers will be Darwin's Family. Music will be provided by Phyllis Niemann, organist. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 14, 2009 in the Houseman Family Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD and will resume Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. • • Darwin was born May 17, 1939 to Avis (Collins) and Edgar Nelson at Canby, MN. He was baptized on June 18, 1939 at Canby, MN. He was raised on a farm near Brandt and attended District 8 country school. Darwin graduated from Brandt High School in 1957. Darwin joined the 741st Transportation Company, Clear Lake, SD as a light vehicle driver. He served from November 1956-November 1962 which included Army Active Duty at Fort Carson, CO. On March 25, 1961 he was united in marriage to Janice Nicola in Watertown, SD. This union was blessed with six children: Nancy, Todd, Karna, Valerie, Darla and Lon. Darwin spent his early employment farming with his father. He then joined Holloway Construction as a crane operator working on bridge construction. This required frequent moves throughout eastern SD. In the mid 1960s Darwin and his family moved to the farm just north of Brandt where he was a dairy farmer. While on the farm, he developed an interest in bees which continued until his death. Darwin spent many years on the Brandt Fire Department. Darwin worked as a Rural Carrier Relief for the Toronto, SD postal area. In 1985 Darwin and his family moved to Clear Lake. He continued working for area farmers. Darwin was an active youth enthusiast. He coached basketball, baseball and softball. Darwin coached the 1986 & 1987 SD State Junior Olympic Softball Girls 16-18 Slowpitch championship teams and also served on the SD State Junior Olympic Softball Commission. Darwin was a local 4-H club leader. He especially enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their activities. Darwin was an avid hunter earning the SD Whitetail Deer Trophy Hunter status and an ardent fisherman. In his earlier years he was a devoted bowler which included a perfect 300 game. Darwin died of a stroke on December 11, 2009 at the Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown, SD.
Darwin is lovingly remembered by his wife, Janice of Clear Lake, SD; his children Nancy (Nelson) Bohlen of Brookings, SD, Todd and Julie (Croonquist) Nelson of Iowa City, IA, Karna (Nelson) and Donavon Schoon of Rapid City, SD, Valerie (Nelson) and Chuck Weisser of Frederick, SD, Darla (Nelson) and Timm Johannesen of Rapid City, SD, and Lon Nelson of Tea, SD; his grandchildren Stephanie (Bohlen) and Chris Westerman, Samantha (Bohlen) and Nick South, Shane, Tyler and Jordan Nelson, Dannielle (Schoon) and Dustin Maxwell, Koleen Schoon, Matthew and Logan Weisser and Carter and Spencer Johannesen; his great grandchildren Jordan Jensen and Jack and Faith Maxwell; and, his brother, Harlan and Peggy Nelson of Terry, MT.
Darwin was preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Avis (Collins) Nelson.
