HONEY GROVE - Harry B. Murphy, 82, of Honey Grove (Reeds Gap), died at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.Born Aug. 29, 1931, he was a son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Henry) Murphy. On Jan. 28, 1967, he married his surviving wife, Brenda L. (Swartz) Murphy, with whom he shared nearly 47 years of marriage.In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his children, Cathy Imes and her husband, Ken, of Honey Grove, Corey Wilson and her husband, Steve, of Newport; Harry R. Murphy, and Christopher E. Murphy and his wife, Dawna, all of Honey Grove; sisters, Dorothy Shearer, of Mifflintown, and Gertrude Dobbs, of New Bloomfield; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.One son, Matthew M. "Matt" Murphy, preceded him in death on June 14, 2008.Mr. Murphy was a member of the South Juniata Baptist Church, Honey Grove, where he served on the fellowship committee and as a greeter. He was also a life member of the Tuscarora Valley Heritage Days and a member of the Tuscarora Grange No. 774, where he was a member of the executive committee and served as steward. Harry also founded the Murphy's Homestead Machinery Show.In earlier life, he worked as a painter at the Letterkenney Army Depot, Chambersburg, for 33 years until his retirement in 1987. During his retirement, he was employed by Junk's Lumber Mill, McCoysville, for 15 years. Harry also served as constable of elections for Tuscarora Township.
Harry's hobbies included hunting and playing horseshoes. He was also known to be a die-hard Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Steelers fan.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at the South Juniata Baptist Church, Honey Grove, with the Rev. Dennis Thompson officiating and assisted by Assistant Pastor Caleb Burd. Interment will be held after the service in the McCullochs Mills Cemetery.A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at the church.For those that wish, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Murphy's memory to the South Juniata Baptist Church, 3647 Smokey Hollow Road, Honey Grove, PA 17035 or to the charity of one's choice.Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
